LEED Home - Spring Street
Atlantic Building, along with Sustainable Structures, is currently building the first LEED Registered home in Newport County, Rhode Island. Our goal is to bring green building concepts and best practices to Newport. The project consists of demolishing the existing structure (recycling and reusing as much of the content as possible, see http://www.atlanticquality.com/Green/Construction_Waste_Control for more information on Atlantic Building's recycling and waste management program).
For the demolition phase of the project, Atlantic Building successfully managed to keep 100% of constuction related debris and waste out of the Rhode Island landfill. All of the debris was tipped and sorted to minimize waste. At Atlantic Building we subscribe to the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" creed. Whenever possible, we make an attempt to reduce the use of or reuse a particular building material. For example, the existing cast iron radiators have a value as scrap metal, however a more efficient application would be to find an alternative site for the radiators, eliminating the need for resource consumption during the recycling process. This also eliminates any resources being used for the manufacturing and transportation of any new cast iron radiators for the new application.
